Happy New Year!

Saying goodbye to a tumultuous 2008 was a relief, yet I welcome 2009 with cautious optimism.  In these wary economic times of uncertainty and apprehension, stress levels are at their highest.  And it is for this reason and others, that I am challenging everyone in Dickinson to focus on improving their health.  I am initiating the c – Powered by Live Healthy Texas”.  Our program, LIVE HEALTHY DICKINSON is focused on improving the health, productivity and quality of life for all who accept the challenge.  The program is formatted as an online team concept.  Teams will consist of 2 -10 members, each team designates a captain, who will be responsible for registering the team online in February. The captain will motivate team members and ensure all team members report data.  This is a pilot program, next year we will join the 100 day national Live Healthy America challenge.  Our initial challenge will begin FEBRUARY 17, 2009 and end APRIL 23, 2009 and is limited to adults, (18 years and older) but as we grow the program in the coming years, we will include our youth, and possibly challenge our neighboring cities to compete against us.

Now is the time to ask friends, family members, and co-workers to join your team, designate your team captain, and register during the month of February. Challenge others in your office or another local business, school campus against school campus, civic group against civic group.  Competition is what motivates us and makes us strong.

The Mayor’s Fitness Challenge 2009 is in partnership with Live Healthy America (LHA) which will provide a website for recording weight loss and physical activity data.  What is great is that you can check the “leader board” and see where your team ranks in competition with the rest of the country or just within Dickinson.  Here’s the catch, LHA charges an $18 fee for each participant.  BUT, each participant will receive a training t-shirt, one-year subscription to a lifestyle magazine, inclusion in drawings for incentives and prizes, and access to accredited health resources when you register online.  Not bad for $18, right?

So come on!  Accept my 65 day challenge and make health, wellness and prevention a personal and community priority.

To REGISTER:  Log on to www.livehealthytexas.org, click on Sign Up Here, Click on Group Programs, enter Group Registration number: LHDICKINSON and register.

If you would like to volunteer to be part of the Mayor’s Task Force on Wellness, please email the Mayor at mayor@ci.dickinson.tx.us, Sally Imig at ImigS@aetna.com or Kathy Wagner at kwagner1949@comcast.net.  Let’s get FIT AND FABULOUS together!

FOURTH OF JULY PICNIC

The 7th Annual 4th of July Community Wide Picnic was held at the VFW Post on Highway 3 on Friday, July 4th.  The celebration started with the Pilot Club’s Children’s Parade which ran from Holy Trinity Church to the VFW Post.  Led off by the Citizen's on Patrol and the Dickinson Volunteer Fire Department, the parade featured may patriotically decorated bikes and wagons. The Dickinson High School Marching Band was on hand to entertain the crowd.

The picnic offered hot dogs, snow cones, drinks, and games, all for only a  quarter.  A D. J. was on hand to play a wide variety of music.  The overcast skies kept everything cool, that is until the rains came.  The festivities were cut short because of the downpour, but a fun time was had by all who attended.

Please enjoy some photographs from the parade and the picnic.  Make you plans now to join us for next years celebration.
