The
communication operators dispatch 911 calls for the police and volunteer
fire departments. They answer calls
for general information from citizens, check for warrants on people
stopped by police officers on the street, and run registration and
stolen checks on vehicles. They also handle after hours and
weekend calls for the water district.
Calls
are dispatched on a state of the art trunked radio system. The
system is maintained by the Galveston
County Emergency Communication District. The radio system
allows communication with other agencies in the county.
The
records division maintains all police and accident reports.
They handle request for copies of reports from citizens,
insurance companies, the courts, and other criminal justice agencies.
Uniform Crime Reporting is
also handled by the records manger.
Captain
Mason handles both the police department budget and the computer system
for the entire city. The local area network includes more than fifty
computers and pieces of peripheral equipment.
The department is in the process of changing to a new computer aided
dispatching and records management system.
