Citizen's
Police Academy

The Citizen's Police Academy (C.P.A.) is a program
that is designed to give the Citizen's of Dickinson a deeper knowledge of their
Police Department, and provides the Citizens and their Police Department a
unique opportunity to interact together. The Dickinson C.P.A. began in 1999 and
has enjoyed great success in bringing the Citizens of
Dickinson and their Police
Department closer together. Twelve class were held between 1999 and 2005. This includes the
two Student Citizen's Police Academy
held during the summer.
The C.P.A. teaching staff and speakers are comprised of Police Officers
from the Dickinson Police Department such as the Chief of Police, Police
Department Administration, Patrol Officers, and Detectives. Guest speakers from
other Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Agencies also make appearances with
insight in their specialized fields. The students of the C.P.A. are instructed
on a variety of general topics form the Texas
Code of Criminal Procedure, Penal
Code Health and Safety Code, and Transportation Code. Instructors elaborate on
these to specific topics such as Traffic Enforcement, Narcotics, Juvenile Law,
DWI. Enforcement, SWAT, Building Searches and many others.
The C.P.A. program is 15 weeks in length, having one 4 hour class per week, on
Thursday nights. The C.P.A. classes are limited to 25 students, all attending
students have applied for membership and have been approved prior to each
Academy. Their is no fee to the students of the C.P.A., all costs and materials
are provided by the Dickinson Police Department.
Dickinson
Citizen's Police Academy Alumni Association
Graduates of
the C.P.A., or those that have completed 2/3 of the Academy are then qualified
for membership in the Citizen's Police Academy Alumni Association (DCPAAA). The
DCPAAA is an organization of alumni of the CPA.
The DCPAAA works closely with the Dickinson Police Department and the DPOA with
community oriented projects and concerns. The DCPAAA meets once a month and are
often involved in forming fund raisers and committees that have positive effects
on the community.
