Physical
Assessment
Current Standards
All
applicants must take and pass a physical assessment. The standards of this
assessment are derived from a compilation of assessment criterion, which can
be closely associated with specific job tasks related to Law Enforcement in
general, and specifically related to Patrol duties.
Applicants must pass this
assessment of their physical condition and abilities prior to being eligible
for appointment. The physical assessment is conducted on the date of the
written exam.
Passing the physical assessment
IS a condition of employment.
The current standards are:
~ Sit ups- The applicant
will be given one minute to correctly perform 25 sit ups.
Correct form will be demonstrated
by examining staff. Knees slightly bent, lying flat on the floor, arms behind
head. Subject will raise to touch elbows to the knees and return to the
starting position. This will constitute one repetition.
~ 300 meter run- The
applicant will complete a 300 meter run in a time not to exceed 1 minute 45
seconds. The applicant will complete the run in the allotted time, without
stopping or walking. This test is given to simulate brief foot chases, or
sprinting to the aid of injured persons or police officers.
~ Dummy drag- The applicant
will be assessed on the ability to move by dragging, a weighted dummy, to
simulate removing a victim or injured police officer from harm or further
injury. This assessment will be given at the immediate completion of the 300
meter run. This will be done to simulate a heightened sense of excitability,
and to assess the applicant’s stamina and motivation for survival. The dummy
will be moved 75 feet in 30 seconds or less.
~ Push up- The applicant
will be given one minute to perform their maximum amount of pushups. This
exercise will be correctly done and will be demonstrated prior to the
assessment by examining staff. Hands will be placed shoulder width apart, in
the up position, with the back and legs forming a straight line. An assistant
will lie on the floor and place a fist on the ground, dissecting a line that
extends between the thumbs of the applicant. Starting in the “up” position,
the applicant will lower themselves, touching their chest to the fist of their
assistant, and then pressing themselves back to the up position. This will
constitute one repetition. Applicants should perform as many repetitions as
possible within the time limit, but a minimum of 20 is necessary to pass the
assessment.
APPLICANTS WILL NEED TO SIGN, AND HAVE NOTARIZED A
RELEASE OF INDEMNITY FORM, PRIOR TO PARTICIPATION IN THE PHYSICAL
ASSESSMENT.
