Preparing for a Hurricane
Each year as hurricane season approaches it is recommended that residents of Dickinson prepare or restock a hurricane
emergency kit. This kit should be kept in a location making it readily available on short notice. The kit should include the following:
- A 3-day supply of water (1 gallon per person per day)
- Food that will not spoil
- 1 change of clothing and footwear per person
- 1 blanket or sleeping bag per person
- A first aid kit with over the counter medications
- Emergency tools, including a battery-powered NOAA weather radio and a portable radio, flashlight, and plenty of extra batteries
- An extra set of car keys and a credit card or cash
- Spare reading glasses
- Special items for infant, elderly, or disabled family members
Last-Minute Additions
When a storm approaches the following items should be added to the kit:
- Insurance papers
- Personal identification such as birth certificates and social security cards
- Medical records and medical insurance cards
- Prescription medications
